EVENT: 2015 Chicago Marathon
EVENT DATE: Oct 11, 2015
There is an Indie Pop song that came out a few years ago by M83 with a line the echoes “The city is my church” over an ecstatic and expanding melody. Without ever having much recourse to any sort of god or church, I always think of that line during my runs along Lakeshore Path. With the oceanic Lake Michigan to my left, the city on my right and the massive blue skyline ever approaching, each run feels holy. Each route is the space where I acknowledge my gratitude for the love and support in my life. It is where I reflect on the absurd vastness, strange beauty and total unknowability of the city and lives around me. Every new path is where I take aim for how I want to project myself into the world. Every step is a resolution for a better, stronger self and a prayer for a better world. The city is my church.
I decided to take my experience of running through Chicago to the next level and take what has been described to me as the ultimate tour of the city. I signed up to run the Chicago Marathon with the Chicago Women’s Health Center, aiming to raise $1,500 and making step I make support of something positive in my community.
I am so glad that the CWHC exists and couldn’t be more excited to put my body and time to help support it. It is such a wonderful resource to the Uptown neighborhood, where I currently teach and live. CWHC is a collectively run health center that provides sliding scale health care and education to women and trans people. They offer a wonderful array of services from providing birth control and primary care to acupuncture and alternative insemination. Besides its affordability and openness, what it truly inspirational about CWHC in the focus they put on individual agency and participation in their care. I encourage you to learn more about them on their website chicagowomenshealthcenter.org. CWHC is wonderful organization is supported solely through donations and grants. It needs and deserves our support.
I invite you to support me in my goal of running the Chicago Marathon and raising $1,500 for CWHC in whatever ways you can. I am asking my friends, family, fellow runners and feminists to make donations in multiples of 26.2 (or whatever really) to my crowdrise.com page (link below). People who make donation will received a hand written thank you card and one of my trading cards.
If you are not able to make a financial donation, please come out October 11th and yell your support. I will be wearing a “Best Paps in Town” Team CWHC jersey with “Jules” on the back.
Thank you for your support!
