THE STORY:

Julia Cashen wrote -

SOPUDEP (Society of Providence United for the Economic Development of Petion-Ville) is a Haitian founded and run grassroots organization located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The organization’s Founder and Director is Madam Réa Dol, a tireless advocate for a just, democratic, and prosperous Haiti.

In 2000, REA DOL and other Haitian community activists founded SOPUDEP with the goal of providing accessible education to adults and children, supporting women’s rights, and creating programs of economic empowerment for members of their community.

Towards this end, Rea started the Institution Mixte de SOPUDEP, a K-12 school that now serves approximately 800 children each day (and their families) as well as microfinance groups and women's collectives.

For her leadership, integrity, and hard work, Réa has earned wide respect in Haiti and the attention of foreign journalists such as New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof. She was the focus of one of his column on “Can Foreign Aid Help This Girl?” and is prominently featured in his book and film “A Path Appears” that premiered on PBS in February, 2015.

THE DELEGATION

As a group of Googlers and Non-Googlers we will be visiting Haiti to stay with Rea where we will:

  • Personally deliver funds to Haitian grassroots orgs in the SOPUDEP network
  • Help establish a computer lab at SOPUDEP
  • Provide supplies and assistance at medical clinics
  • Work shoulder to shoulder with Haitians in constructing the new building for SOPUDEP school
  • Meet with Haitian community/human rights activists to understand the current reality and ways to build partnerships
  • Visit an IDP (internally displaced persons) camp in Delmas where thousands of families are still living in tents post-earthquake and address their relocation needs

YOUR HELP

We are raising funds to help support SOPUDEP in their effort to provide educational opportunities to the Haitian community.

1. The construction of SOPUDEP's new school in Port-au-Prince (Delmas 83) that will host a technical/ vocational school, university classes, a computer center, a library, and a gathering space for young and old.  Delmas 83 is being constructed to be a flagship “green” school with solar power and clean, drinking water stored in a 70,000 gallon water cistern

2. SOPUDEP teachers' salaries

3. SOPUDEP's network of Grassroots Orgs (learn more about them here: www.sopudep.org)

We thank you for your consideration and support of this amazing cause!
