Throughout the year, Leake & Watts supports over 3,000 children and young adults in our Early Head Start, preschool and Head Start programs, our special education schools, child welfare programs, developmental disabilities and juvenile justice programs. Most are from low-income families and their parents need help to provide even the basics, such as fruits and vegetables for their lunches and warm coats during the cold weather. The holidays are a struggle for these families, since many parents can’t afford to buy their children gifts.
But we believe that everyone deserves to celebrate the holidays, and so each winter, Leake & Watts collects and distributes over 3,000 toys, games and gifts cards so that no child or young adult is left out of the holiday celebrations.
We love handing out baseball gloves, Barbies, Easy Bake Ovens, action figures and bracelet making kits, all of which bring huge smiles to the faces of preschoolers with developmental delays and elementary school kids with learning disabilities in our special education programs. We love to see the excitement of the teens in our foster care and residential programs when they get to use their gift cards to buy new clothes or shoes that their parents haven’t been able to afford. The excitement is infectious as men and women in our group homes for young adults with developmental disabilities show off the new DVDs that they got for the holidays.
Will you consider making a donation to help brighten the season for these children, teens and young adults?
A donation of just $10 buys a Barbie, football, basketball or action figure, while $15 buys a bracelet making kit or a board game. A larger donation of $25 will buy a Lego set or an art set, while $50 will purchase an Easy Bake Oven or a Baby Alive. Our staff carefully selects gifts that are suited to each child, making sure that they receive something that they will truly enjoy.
If you would like to be involved in sorting and handing out toys, please contact the Leake & Watts Development Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 914-375-8605. We would love to have additional volunteers!
