BENEFITING: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: TEAM IMF
EVENT DATE: Nov 15, 2015
I became intriqued with triathlons Nov. 2012 after watching the World Chamionship Kona Ironman race on TV. I told my wife, that would be cool to do. I blame her for this addicition, as she immediately said " go for it".
So my couch potatoe 215 lb. lazy butt, began the journey. My first attempt at excersice was running to the corner (8 houses) Honestly, if I would of had my cell phone I would have called my supportive wife to come and get me.
2nd attempt at excersice was a bike ride with my wife. We rode 6 miles from home to our daughter's volleyball practice. We sent out a warning to love ones, "if we can't be reached in an hour call the National Guard". The bike ride actually went OK.
Now the fun one, swimming. I joined the local gym, new goggles in hand, fat rolling out of my speedo and headed to the pool. My thoughts, of course I can swim I beat my kids across our pool all the time. OMG, I did 25 yards and thought I was going to die. I proceeded to complete 12 x 25's over the next hour, exiting the pool before I was either going to drown or throw up.
Over the past 2 years, I have shed in excess of 30 lbs, completed sprint, olympic and half Ironman distances. My first attempt at the Ironman distance I failed to complete as I developed SIPE (swimming induced Pulmonary Edema) aka couldn't breath due to fluid build up in the lungs or both.
Which brings me to Team IMF. I knew soon after the disappointment wore off of not completing my first Ironman, God had a bigger plan for me. Joining IMF I truly believe is part of that plan. 2014 Ironman I made about me, which isn't pleasing to my Maker. 2015 Ironman will be about helping others through this wonderful foundation.
Any donation large or small I am grateful. It will help others less fortunate than me to provide hope for the future.
All money raised through the TEAM IMF program will benefit The IRONMAN Foundation, and specifically - the Community Fund Program. This program benefits those in the communities where IRONMAN events are held, by providing charitable support to a variety of local non-profit organizations that recognize citizens in need and provide support to the local community.
Within those communities, The IRONMAN Foundation will provide grant funding opportunities to non-profit organizations, while also working with community leaders to identify projects that will benefit the community and provide funding to support those initiatives. The IRONMAN Foundation has provided funding opportunities of nearly
twenty nine million dollars to numerous non-profit beneficiaries worldwide.
