BENEFITING: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: TEAM IMF
EVENT DATE: Nov 15, 2015
On a family trip to Kona in 2007, I went on a walk with Allison on Ali'i Drive. I had watched the Ironman in the past, but I'll never forget the feeling I had when I saw the sign at the start of the Ironman World Championships: I will do this.
I was never what you would call an "athlete", or even "in shape", but I knew that I had to try... Even if I was told I couldn't run because of a spinal defect.
I started with 5k's and Mud Runs and worked up to Sprint Triathlons and Half Marathons. As time went on, with the help of my family and my "family", I gained momentum and lost over 50 pounds in the process. Now, seven years later, I'm ready to try a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, then a 26.2 mile run... On the same day...
For me, Triathlon has always been a way for reaching in hopes of finding out what I'm capable of as an individual, so I thought it would use this as an opportunity to help others find out as well. This is my first Ironman, so I’ve decided to team up with the Ironman Foundation (IMF) in support of organizations like the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). While in Physical Therapy school, I volunteered with PossAbilities in Loma Linda in their Triathlon and Wheelchair Basketball programs. Like PossAbilities, CAF helps people with physical disabilities participate in sports, like triathlon, at all levels.
