BENEFITING: Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR CAUSE
Hawaii is the only state in the US that does not have a memorial to honor Fallen Officers. As a result, in 2010, the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation was formed. Its primary purpose is to design, construct, and maintain a monument to honor our sons of Hawaii who have died in the line of duty, while serving the people of the State.
In 2014, to pay tribute and to raise awareness to the cause, I participated in triathlon races across the state wearing BDU's, a ballistic vest and helmet (40 pounds of gear) culminating in the Ironman World Championships in Kona. I raised 13K for the Memorial Foundation and on behalf of the families of the 65 Fallen Officers. This attracted the attention of the State Legislatures who approved a bill that will provide the foundation with $600K to help build the memorial. That, along with the funds already raised by the foundation, should be enough to complete the project. However, construction will exhaust all funds raised thus far. So this year I am continue my efforts of raising donations to cover potential construction over runs, upkeep and maintenance of the memorial going forward.
My motto: "Here to complete, not to compete" refers to my mission of utilizing Triathlon not just as a test of endurance and competition, but as a display of perseverance, dedication and tribute. I race in triathlons as a sounding board to send a message that Hawaii's Law Enforcement community needs your help to finish this mission. This year, to up the ante, I have "geared up" raising the weight on my kit to 50 pounds.
This is my "Last year in gear" and I hope to continue to inspire and achieve the goal of having a place to honor my fallen brothers. In order to keep my fundraising efforts alive after I hang up my vest, I have established a HLEMF Triathlon entitled "H3T:Race to the Base". An historic event that will see the bike leg of the race climb and descend the H3 freeway, an epic bike ride that's never been done before.
