EVENT: YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR CAUSE
A few years ago while on secondment in Russia for my work, I took up the hobby of participating in triathlons. I completed various distances including the Sprint, Olympic, Half, and even the Full Ironman (at Ironman Louisville, Ironman Texas, and Ironman Florida). This year, I am fortunate to be participating in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on October 10th. I noticed that many people who participate in Ironman do so for a personal cause. I see it gives them a great deal of motivation and inspiration and helps them give back to worthy causes while participating in a challenging all day endurance event. Last year, I raised over $8,000 participating in an Ironman This year, I am again raising money for a very important and personal cause.
One of my children, Charlotte (age 12), has 22Q which is caused by a missing section (microdeletion) of chromosome 22. This chromosome was missing from the moment Charlotte was conceived. The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is present in 1 out of every 2,000-4,000 live births, in 1 in 68 children with congenital heart disease, and in 5 to 8 percent of children born with cleft palate; the 22q11.2 deletion is almost as common as Down syndrome, a widely recognized chromosomal disorder.
The deletion has the potential to affect almost every system in the body and can cause a wide range of health problems. No two people are ever exactly alike, even when they have the same syndrome, and not every person with the deletion is affected in the same way. Since no two people are impacted in the same way, early diagnosis, treatment, and family support are imperative. The Dempster Family Foundation helps provide this support to families and have helped us tremendously with family support and education. The Dempster Family Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the growing community of those affected by 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. We do this through partnerships that positively impact awareness, research, and education.
On race day in Kona, I am racing for my family, Charlotte and the Dempster Family Foundation. Please support this worthy cause with a donation of any amount. The Dempster Family Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization so your donation is tax deductible. The Ironman Foundation is helping me collect donations. Thank you for your help and support.
