ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR CAUSE
Earlier this year, my wife Dawn and I lost our twins; a boy and a girl. Zander and Whitney Vona were born prematurely at the age of 21 weeks on February 21, 2015. Although nothing can ever erase this tragedy, or completely relieve the pain we feel, the “Footprints on the Heart” program at Sisters Hospital was a Godsend. Through the "Footprints" program, the nursing staff of Sisters Hospital helped us through that most difficult time of losing two children, and encouraged us to participate through the steps of the program, even when we were unsure if we could “handle it”. We were able to spend so much time with our babies, and most importantly to us, let them feel our love for them while they were still alive. The “Footprints on the Heart” program, and the support of Sisters Hospital nursing staff, has given us some positive memories from an otherwise painful experience; and we are truly grateful. There is such a need for this program that most could never understand or appreciate.
On August 30th of this year, I will be participating in Ironman Muskoka. I am doing this race as much for Zan & Whitney, as I am for myself. I will carry their knitted hats from the hospital with me, so that they might feel what it’s like to swim, bike and run; activities they will never experience as children, and that most of us take for granted. On Zan & Whitney's behalf, I would like to use this opportunity to give back to the “Footprints on the Heart” program; to which we are forever grateful. I hope you can help me.
