On November 21-22, 2015, for a 24 hour period, with no sleep, Rich Harris, a Bruno Tostes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt at Renzo Gracie Latham, will train Jiu Jitsu with rotating partners to help raise donations for New York Oncology Hematology's "Community Cancer Foundation", to help Capital District families coping with the financial stress of a loved one fighting cancer.
WHY: In November 2014, Laurie Harris, Rich’s wife and mother of three, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer of the bone marrow. From December 2014 - July 2015, Laurie underwent intense chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant to help “tap out” the cancer. With Laurie's cancer now in remission, but knowing it will be a lifelong fight, Rich wants to honor Laurie's fight and honor his father, Richard, who lost his battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2009, while helping other families meet the tough financial demands of having a loved one fighting cancer.
DONATIONS: Rich is seeking pledges of $1/hour (more is welcome!) for each hour on the mat. Rich has committed to 24 hours straight - with no sleep - to help raise these funds. All funds will be donated to the NYOH "Community Cancer Foundation". The Foundation provides emergency financial support for families undergoing cancer treatment. Foundation funds assist families with travel costs, overnight accommodations, groceries, etc., while a family member is receiving cancer treatment. 100% of funds received by the Foundation go directly to families; no funds are used for administrative costs.
