BENEFITING: Dwankhozi Hope
EVENT DATE: Aug 14, 2015
We are thrilled to share the mission of our second annual group who are preparing to embark on the 2015 RSVP Bike Ride in support of Dwankhozi Hope!
This August, a group of bike riding friends is coming together to travel 188 miles, spanning two countries, over the course of two days...with the goal of raising $15,000 for Dwankhozi Hope, all of which goes to empower a rural community in Zambia (a handful of them are pictured to the left, as you scroll through the pictures).
Dwankhozi Hope is a nonprofit organization based in Seattle, WA that strives to empower the children & families of Zambia through partnership in education & community development, recognizing our interconnectedness as we seek mutual transformation. At the center of this partnership is Dwankhozi Community School, where nearly 600 students in grades 1-9 come each day to learn and further their education.
In rural Zambia the need for education is great, but the public resources to support schools are not. The school began over 10 years ago thanks to the Dwankhozi community's passionate adults who came together to form a PTA and supply volunteer teachers so their children could have a better chance at an education and a future. Since then, we have expanded our involvement and support to launch adult classes, improve economic development opportunities, and address health needs. We continue to look to the community for direction on what needs are greatest how we go about meeting them together.
Examples of how your contribution is used through Dwankhozi Hope:
-$50: supplies school uniforms to 5 children - an empowering, inclusive symbol that encourages children's committment to their school.
-$125: supports 10 women's enrollment in adult literacy classes.
-$300: sponsors a student for an entire term (transportation, accomdations, tuition, food) to attend secondary school at a boarding school, currently the only option available...until the Secondary School is completed!
$400: sponsors a teacher's certification - the most important part of Dwankhozi Community School!
The Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party (RSVP) is an annual ride that begins at the University of Washington on August 14th and ends in Vancouver, BC the next day. Until then, each team member is spreading the word about Dwankhozi Hope's involvement and partnership in Zambia, and working hard to meet our fundraising goal.
