My dad was born in the 1930's to a large farming family in the Midwest. His life mission was helping others. As a young man, my dad joined the U.S. Army and served in their medical department. After his military service, he drove an ambulance for many years before embarking on his career as a Patient Care Assistant for over 35 years at a local hospital retiring in 1999. In 2010, doctors found a large tumor in my dad's lung. In less than 4 weeks, my mom and I found ourselves at the hospital watching my father take his last breath. This was the hardest day of my life.
Meanwhile, my high school friend and former college roommate was dealing with a similar experience. Her friend was battling breast cancer. She was diagnosed in college..
In 2012, I wanted to do something to help and thus participated in the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program and donated hair for the cause.
Unfortunately, this would not be the last time I would hear the word cancer. Last year, I learned that my boyfriend’s beautiful mother was diagnosed with myeloma. In her 60s, my boyfriend’s mother is an amazing woman. She and her husband of 40+ years raised 8 talented children on a mediocre salary. She is thoughtful, creative, strong and true to her beliefs. She is a great story-teller and has an infectious laugh. She is the quintessential grandmother. I only wish I could spend more time getting to know her.
When I first heard of the virtual 2,015 mile challenge in 2015, I was a little scared at first. I am not much of a runner. But after thinking about it for a week or so I decided to get my boyfriend and his two boys on board. The 4 of us created a team and will be running, walking and exercising our way to 2,015 miles in 2015.
Please support us in our trek to complete 2,015 miles in 2015. We are running, walking and exercising to stamp out cancer!!
