Renee Jackson and her daughter, Aquiya, have spent a year in transit moving from shelter to shelter in New York City after being evicted from their family’s subsidized apartment in Harlem. While Renee struggles to save money and find a home to call their own, Aquiya continues her high school studies with ambitions to attend college. Challenges persist as they remain on the waiting list for a Housing Authority apartment, and Aquiya has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Could you imagine if this was your family in need?
Because of caring people like you, Catholic Charities provided nearly 4,000 individuals similar to the Jackson family, with coats, hats, sweaters, blankets and more last year. Together we can keep hope alive this Christmas season and serve many more New Yorkers in need! The Junior Board is taking action. Help the Junior Board meet their fundraising goal of $15K and make a gift to the Catholic Charities St. Nicholas Project today and help us share the spirit of the Christmas season with our neighbors in need!
Every $65 allows Catholic Charities to provide gifts of necessities for one individual during the holiday season.
What is the St. Nicholas Project? The St. Nicholas Project encompasses the many Catholic Charities holiday programs offered through the New York Archdiocese to thousands of needy families and individuals of all religions. The program provides the basic necessities for a more joyous Christmas. Generous donors, volunteers and parish groups distribute winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, blankets and more to families who otherwise would go without during this blessed season.
What is the St. Nicholas Project Shopping Day? More than 500 volunteers join us to shop for nearly 4,000 Catholic Charities clients and provide them with winter necessities. Volunteers shop and bag the clothes and household items at Kmart, Astor Place. Each volunteer receives a profile of the family they are shopping for and a maximum budget. All shopping items are then delivered to our clients in time for the Christmas holiday.
What is the Junior Board? The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York Junior Board introduces young professionals to the varied programs and works of Catholic Charities through volunteer opportunities, social gatherings, faith-based events, and philanthropic support. The Junior Board helps cultivate the next generation of leaders committed to Catholic Charities and serving those in need in our community. What is the Junior Board’s role in the St. Nicholas Project? The Junior Board members work hard year-round in order to make the St. Nicholas Project a success. Through numerous fundraising and volunteering initiatives such as the Junior Board Gala and coordinating the logistics for shopping day the Junior Board makes the St. Nicholas Project shopping day possible.
Remember…need has no season!! In addition to providing help at Christmas, our St. Nicholas Project enables people in need to access a continuum of services throughout the year. These services include: summer camps and after school programs for youth; emergency food pantries; employment readiness training, placement and support; case management to help people resolve financial, emotional and family issues; eviction prevention services; immigration and refugee related legal services; specialized assistance to the blind and visually impaired; and supported housing for the seriously and persistently mentally ill.
