BENEFITING: SYRIAN AMERICAN MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION
We began as a group of expats committed to helping the millions of people affected by the Syrian Refugee Crisis. In 2015, our first annual 5k4Refugees International Virtual 5k benefited CARE International, an organization that provides humanitarian assistance to refugees in Turkey. With participants in over 30 countries, together we raised $14,921. We nearly tripled our initial fundraising goal of $5,000, and this would not have been possible without the overwhelming compassion, enthusiasm, and generosity we received from people like you all over the world.
Last year, the picture of Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi on the beach struck something deep within us and inspired us to help the millions of refugees who were risking, and sometimes losing, their lives while fleeing war-torn Syria. Nearly one year later, another picture has shocked our world – that of Omran Daqneesh, the young Syrian boy pulled from a damaged building after an airstrike in the northern city of Aleppo. Omran instantly became the face of suffering endured by Syrians. Every day, wounded patients flood hospitals with horrific injuries resulting from unimaginable violence. These hospitals are overwhelmed, undersupplied, and understaffed, so this year we have decided to focus on medical care. We have chosen to fundraise for the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) Foundation since this organization provides critical medical care to both refugees who have escaped Syria as well as those who are still in the country and are victims of war.
