THE STORY:
AYR NEW ENGLAND ALUMNI wrote -
A group of members and friends of The New England Alumni chapter of the Association of Y Retirees will be traveling to the Dominican Republic with the sole purpose of demolishing and completely rebuilding two homes for families in the village of Don Gregorio. Don Gregorio is in the Nizao county, located on the Southeast shore of the country. This will be our fifth consecutive visit by volunteers from the group, and many are repeat visitors. The relationships built with the local residents in this impoverished area are utterly invaluable, as their appreciation at not only attaining safe, healthy living spaces is evident, but the ease of sharing the YMCA mission is remarkable and can be seen in the pride of the members of the community.
As each Volunteer incurs the cost for flights, accommodations, and meals, fundraising efforts are in place to help with building materials, local labor costs, and other associated expenses which relate directly to the homebuilding project.
