BENEFITING: MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL
Over the past nine years, Dr. Kimihiko Oishi, an attending physician in Clinical Genetics and Pediatrics, has run the NYC marathon! This year, he is running his 10th NYC marathon with a special goal in mind. With each mile that he runs, he hopes to raise funds for the Child Life Program at the Kravis Children's Hospital at Mount Sinai to help pediatric patients and families served by these services. The Child Life Program helps patients cope with their fears and anxieties by offering therapeutic activities tailored to meet their social, developmental, emotional, and educational needs. The positive outcomes of these services are well documented, including improved coping and adjustment and increased psychological well-being in children, adolescents, and their family members. The Child Life Specialist in Metabolic Genetics at Mount Sinai Hospital works with other members of the Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy Department and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop individualized, culturally sensitive, and developmentally informed coping strategies for patients and family members facing the challenges posed by genetic disorders. By providing procedural support and guided relaxation during potentially challenging medical encounters such as blood draws, the child life team help patients access their own strengths and positive coping skills. In the metabolic clinic, where patients and families are often seen frequently, the child life specialist and music therapist use familiar play material and musical activities to create opportunities for self expression, creativity, and fun. Using play medical kits and dolls, for instance, patients of varying ages are able to explore, learn, and master experiences and feelings that they may not otherwise be able to put into words. Join team “MilesforSmiles” and help to humanize the healthcare experience for countless patients and families!
