2016 State High Sweet Potato Classic
The 10th annual State College Area High School alumni (5v5) touch football tournament will be held Friday, November 25th at 10:30 am at Memorial Field.
There are many things that separate our Thanksgiving football from the rest, first and foremost among them being the over $25,000 in donations to amazing causes that the State High Sweet Potato Classic has generated through contributions from participants and others in the community. We look to continue this tradition in 2016 and will be following up with information on the plan for this year’s donation.
The State High Sweet Potato Classic is also set apart by the scope of the competition and, as a result, bragging rights that accompany a title. The field for the 2016 edition will feature 15 teams and well over 100 participants representing State High graduating classes from 1992 through 2016.
Over our first 9 years, 8 different classes reached the championship game, and 4 different classes took home championships – 1998, 2001, 2003, and 2006.
Help us spread the word so we can keep this train rolling and continue to have our one-of-a-kind event be a true difference maker.
Unique to 2016, and moving forward, is a new fundraising initiative to adjoin our previous causes. The State College Football Alumni have established a fund through the SCASD Education Foundation that will be used to support the next set of renovations planned for Memorial Field. Those plans call for a field house that will include home and visitor locker rooms, meeting rooms, public bathrooms, and a concessions area. There will also be new stands and press box built on the west side.
The general pool of donations this year will be split, with 50% of the donations being directed to the Memorial Field project. The other 50% will be directed towards four scholarships awarded at the State College Football Senior banquet in the names of Matt Weakland, Kevin Dare, Karen Bruno Ganter, and Jeremy Wise, in addition to Team Ream.
One of the things that separates our Thanksgiving "Turkey Bowl" from others, is that each graduated State High class forms a team to compete for the title. In addition to reliving our glory days competing on the field, we wanted to have a friendly competition for a good cause, by having each class create a sub-group in CrowdRise and try to raise the most money. If you don't have a specific class you want to donate towards, donations to the general pool are also gladly accepted.
