BENEFITING: OPEN HEART MAGIC
ORGANIZER: OPEN HEART MAGIC
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
I am celebrating my 7th year as a hospital magician - yeah!! I magic at both University of Chicago Comer Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, working with the Child Life Services team to bring magic to sick children. The time spent is a time where kids do not think about where they are or what they are battling, it is all about the amazement of magic and being a kid. I perform 2-3 tricks, all of which are designed to only “work” when the child commands the magic to work. At the end, I teach them a trick, making them an official magician.
Open Heart Magic has seen incredible growth since it’s inception in 2004. The community of rock star volunteer magicians has grown drastically, from 38 magicians in 2012 to 120 magicians changing the hospital experience across Chicago in 2016. We expanded to Cleveland Clinic and C.S. Motts Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 2015 we reached over 9,4000 kids one-on-one at their bedside and plan to blow that number out of the water in 2016! With the help of Charity Team athletes, like myself, this audacious goal will become a reality.
Once again I am a member of the Open Heart Magic Charity Team. The funds raised by the Charity Team will fund continued expansion to new hospital partners and more magicians – which means we get to see more kids. This summer (Ragbrai) I rode 60 miles up the hills of Iowa (2,900 feet of climb) as my personal challenge to raise money in support of Open Heart Magic. I am asking for your support of my ride and of Open Heart Magic.
Thank you so very much!

Open Heart Magic has pioneered an innovative way to reach children who are being treated for serious illness through the surprise, excitement and wonder of magic performed at their hospital bedside.
Our personalized interactions help children feel special, more confident and empowered during a scary and stressful time. By inviting them to be a part of the interaction, we energize kids and help them find the strength they need to heal. Because our Bedside Magic performances are one-on-one, we’re able to work with kids of all ages, regardless of physical or developmental restrictions. Our performances benefit the parents and siblings of these patients who are experiencing stress as well.
