THE STORY:

When you realize it's more than just you...

This marathon is very important to me! Not only is it going to be my FIRST marathon, but I am running for a team that I passionately support and hold a great tie to secondary to its effects on my family. Some of you may know that breast cancer has made its self known all too well to my family. My grandmother fought hard against this ugly disease losing her breast along the way but never her spirit. I only know her through stories shared with me because this disease took her before I was born, when my mother was just 26 years old. Breast cancer again made its self known when my mother was diagnosed my freshman year of college in 2008. This was not easy on anyone in my family including my father who saw the love of his life be diagnosed with the same disease that stole his mother-in-law. It was just as hard on my siblings, including my brother who was a senior in college, my sister who was a junior in high school and my younger brother who was only in the 7th grade. I can remember the day of my mother's first chemo treatment, where I was sitting on the couch with tears in my eyes as I tried to study while I heard her sick upstairs in the bathroom, knowing there was nothing I could do in that moment to help ease her pain. The diagnosis and process effected us all in a different ways, however the one thing that kept use unified and positive was my mother's strength. My mother showed nothing but courage and determination to beat this disease, working everyday as a postal carrier through her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. My mother had once said, "why am I going to stay home, where I am left to dwell on my fears and cry, when I can work through this disease and distract my mind from the negative." Sometimes I think cancer comes to strong individuals because they are the fighters who will not let the disease define them, and my mother was one of the most courageous warriors. My mother was in remission for 7 years after her first diagnosis with breast cancer, until this past fall when she was re-diagnosed. The diagnosis was hard for the family but not as hard as the first time, secondary to the understanding of my mother's true strength and will-power. My mother has gone through surgery and is now going through the last of her radiation treatments, which again she works daily through with a smile on her face because cancer does not define her and she will not let anything expecially breat cancer break her stride. The greatest lessons I have learned from my mom is, "life is what you make it". So I intend to live my life each day to the fullest and reach for challenges to build my own strength, including finishing my first full marathon. I am running this marathon in honor of my grandmother and to represent my mother, hoping I can only embody the strength she expresses daily. Please help me in raising money for such a great charity, that promotes hopefulness and chances for the future of all women decreasing the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. THANK YOU to all that can help me cross that finish line :-)
