BENEFITING: BRIGHT PINK
ORGANIZER: BRIGHT PINK
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
Unfortunately, cancer has had a big impact on my family. I lost my Aunt Kathy to melanoma when I was younger and more recently watched my Mom endure aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments as she battled triple negative breast cancer. While I feel extremely fortunate that my Mom’s treatment was effective, I grieve for others that haven’t been as lucky.
I am proud to dedicate my first marathon to my Mom. Her positive attitude and unwavering compassion for others even when faced with rigorous treatments inspired me. I also admire her for continuing to mentor other women battling cancer through breast cancer support groups.
With breast cancer, prevention and early detection are crucial. Overwhelmed with the task of preparing for a family holiday gathering, my Mom almost skipped the mammogram that exposed the lump in her breast. I believe that catching her cancer early played a huge role in successfully treating it. As such, I have decided to concentrate my fundraising efforts on Bright Pink—the only national non-profit organization focused on prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women.
I will be training and fundraising with my sister Lisa and good friend Pat. Together, we hope to help fund life-saving breast and ovarian health programs that will help women live longer, healthier lives.
