BENEFITING: BRIGHT PINK
ORGANIZER: BRIGHT PINK
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
As many may (or may not because I haven't been super open about it) know, my mom got diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer last October. I actually remember getting the news while wearing pink for breast cancer awareness day in October while student teaching. Irony at it’s finest.
Last year I started running longer distances as a way to prove myself. I was never a runner per se, and never thought I could accomplish such a distance as 26.2 miles. However, back in April of last year (after completing my first half marathon), I decided to put my name into the Chicago marathon lottery. Lucky me at getting picked. (insert sarcasm here) Traveling, hot weather, and student teaching really put a damper on the training schedule that I had for completing the full marathon. Although I wasn’t super prepared to run the event, I knew that I couldn’t quit, especially in such a difficult time. If I quit, what message was I sending to my mother who was about to endure chemotherapy? To make matters worse, my mom and I had to face the tough decision of putting our cat to eternal sleep the day before the marathon. Sweat and TEARS for sure.
I have done extensive research on triple positive breast cancer, and specifically the HER2protein, and know that without research, specific treatments to target this protein would not exist today. Only 20% of invasive breast cancers are a result of HER2 gene amplification or overexpression of HER2 protein. As always, finding the cancer early helps with treatment!
This year, I want to complete the marathon as a symbol of a so called emotional journey. For that reason, I have chosen to run on behalf of a charity that focuses on prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. Although my mom tested negative for the BRCA gene, I personally know many that have been affected by this, and we all know cancer does not discriminate age-wise. My grandmother from my dad’s side also died of breast cancer, so I have family history from both sides. (Ladies, make sure to assess your risk!!!)
MOST IMPORTANTLY, this marathon will also be a celebration of my mom ending her Herceptin treatments, and hopefully a big middle finger to her cancer forever. It’s been a rough time, but my mom has been a total badass and I couldn't be more proud of her!!
I really hate asking people for money, but I would truly appreciate a donation on behalf of all the boobies out there. Remember, TAX DEDUCTIBLE! Instead of vowing to buy me a drank after I complete, donate! I have pledged to raise $1,000. I want to be a driving force in empowering women to live healthier, happier and longer lives. I want to somehow turn such a negative in my life, into a positive force. As a thanks for donating, and supporting me, I’ll make sure to help you out any time you need a helping hands, or a shoulder to lean on. :)
If you do not feel comfortable doing it online with a credit card, you can ask me about other options.
If you can’t donate, please say an extra prayer for all those affected with cancer, as well as a prayer for me on October 9! ;) (that or come cheer me on!)
