The Story

EVENT DATE: Aug 13, 2016

DEADLINE TO GIVE: Aug 11, 2016

The Flyathlon is a unique race event that integrates three of the West's greatest activities; trail running, fly-fishing, and craft beer. The premise is simple...

run. fish. beer.

During an official event, your score is determined as the time it takes you to run (with all of your fishing equipment on your back) through the entire course, adjusted by a “fish factor” based on what you caught during your run. Both the night before and after the race, fine local craft beer is served.

The 3rd Annual Middle Creek Flyathlon is a fundraising event for coldwater conservation projects, with a focus on native trout. Our 2016 501(c)(3) partners for this event are Colorado Trout Unlimited and the Western Native Trout Initiative. In 2015, this event raised more than $20,000 for projects with a focus on native trout.

For example, here are some of the projects that donations contributed to in this past year:

• Rebuilding / improving 10 miles of trail to improve angler access to a Rio Grande cutthroat trout fishery in Saguache County, Colorado. This project was organized in conjunction with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and involves many past flyathletes who are giving back by volunteering their time to improve these trails.

• Production of an educational Rio Grande cutthroat trout trailhead sign that will be placed at the trailheads of at least 6 trails accessing Rio Grande cutthroat trout fisheries. We also leveraged crowdfunded money to get a grant to print 2000 of these signs as posters, that were distributed around the great state of Colorado.

• Contribution to an engineering study evaluating the integrity of the dam that creates Haypress Lake, the primary hatchery breeding water for the Rio Grande cutthroat trout.

• Contribution to a Trout Unlimited project on Jim Creek, near La Jara reservoir in Colorado. Jim Creek contains a conservation population of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout, but in the past decade, the lower section has been overgrazed by cattle to the point where cutthroat trout rarely use this reach of stream. Our dollars will help to exclude cattle from trampling the stream, and will help to regrow vegetation to stabilize the banks.

Please consider contributing to this campaign to help protect Colorado's coldwater rivers and streams by donating through your favorite flyathlete's page. Because CTU and WNTI are 501c3 organizations, your donations are tax deductible.
