BENEFITING: SPARROWS NEST OF THE HUDSON VALLEY INC
ORGANIZER: SPARROWS NEST OF THE HUDSON VALLEY INC
First off, if you have visited this page, I thank you. In April I will be running a half marathon in Disney. Proceeds from this run will benefit Sparrow's Nest which is an organization in Dutchess County that is feeding families who are fighting cancer. I have been following Sparrow's Nest since the organization started less than 4 years ago. Each time a new event was posted I wanted to get involved. TIme did not allow for such things and then in November 2014 I had to send a note to Krista asking for help. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39. And so the chaos began, because, no, it was not a journey. I had a lumpectomy in December 2014, a week before Christmas. The surgery was a success and fairly uneventful as I left with no drain which was a concern of mine. I knew I would need radiation and figured this was going to be an easy ride after I recovered from surgery. When I returned to see my surgeon two weeks post-surgery and she suggested an oncologist and chemo, I was floored; and terrified. I quickly made appointments to meet with 3 oncologists and chose one who I connected with and who friends had worked with already. Chemo started at the end of January and went on for 20 very long weeks. After a short break of a month, I began 7 weeks of radiation which was how I spent my summer. It was challenging for my family, to say the least. Once my treatments were over I returned to work and started to take care of myself in a different way incorporating yoga into my day and eventually I started running again. When Krista mentioned an April half marathon I knew I had to do it. This run is for all those who can not run, who are battling cancer. Since my diagnosis I have had far too many friends diagnosed with breast cancer and one diagnosed with lymphoma. I admire Krista for her energy and for all she is doing to feed these families who are fighting. Please consider making a donation of any amount to Sparrow's Nest as they truly are an amazing organzation. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
