I AM RUNNING THE 2016 VERMONT CITY MARATHON WITH EVERY MOTHER COUNTS IN SUPPORT OF MATERNAL HEALTH AROUND THE WORLD.
This past year, I became a mother to a healthy baby. I was lucky to have a skilled team of doctors to help me through my pregnancy and to support me when I needed to have an assisted delivery. Not every mother is so fortunate, so I am dedicating my run at the Vermont City Marathon this year to raising funds and awareness for maternal health.
What does running have to do with it? Often distance is the biggest barrier to a woman and her family getting the care they need. Many women live miles away from healthcare providers and facilities, with extremely limited access to reliable transportation. Imagine having to travel on foot for miles in order to access pre-natal care or delivery. Simply put, I want to run so that others don't have to. And now, I'm hoping you will lend your support to this important cause, no matter how big or small. When you donate, 100% of your donation goes directly to support maternal health programs on the ground.
More about the cause: Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. That's 800 women every day, including 2 per day in the United States. The good news is that 98% of these deaths can be prevented if we address the barriers to maternal health. Major barriers include limited access to transportation, lack of supplies, and an insufficient number of educated birth attendants and health care providers.
Every Mother Counts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Every Mother Counts informs, engages, and mobilizes new audiences to take actions and raise funds that support maternal health programs around the world.
