More than $3,500 raised with just over a month to go!
September 04, 2017
I'm running the 2017 Chicago Marathon so that Open Heart Magic can help more kids in hospitals can learn how to do magic tricks and thus bring some joy to their lives at a time when it is so desperately needed.
Running a marathon is something that has been on my bucket list for about as long as I can remember. It has always been one of those things where I say I'm going to do it but then I get distracted by something else or decide that running is hard and I could just eat pizza instead.
No more. My buddy Colin posted a Facebook status from his honeymoon about how OHM's team needed more runners to raise more money. Suddenly, I had a reason to run the marathon and a deadline to get my training done by.
The race isn't until October, but I started training for it on New Year's Day, because if I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it all out. So please join me in my support of a wonderful organization that brings a joy to a lot of kids who could really use some. This isn't about me, this is about those kids and what we can do to help improve their lives.
Be a Hero for Kids! Run for Charity. Take on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon
Your hard work will help bring magic and smiles to thousands of kids and their families at their bedsides and help grow programs at ten hospitals in the Chicago area in 2017. The funds raised by the Charity Team will fund expansion to new hospital partners and allow for significant growth – which means we get to see more kids. The Charity Team is one of the main reasons we were able to reach over 9,400 kids one-on-one at their bedside in 2015. Your participation will have a huge impact.
Our runners and athletes come from all walks of life. From serious Crossfit athletes & marathoners to first time runners who want to run for charity, they all make the choice to be awesome.
When you join the team and run for charity, your efforts will help kids and their families at the following hospitals:
- Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn
- Advocate Children’s Hospital – Park Ridge
- Alexian Brothers Women’s and Children’s Hospital
- Central DuPage Hospital
- Lurie’s Children’s Hospital
- Northwest Community Hospital
- NorthShore Evanston Hospital
- Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
- Rush University Medical Center
- University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital
Open Heart Magic has pioneered an innovative way to reach children who are being treated for serious illness through the surprise, excitement and wonder of magic performed at their hospital bedside.
Our personalized interactions help children feel special, more confident and empowered during a scary and stressful time. By inviting them to be a part of the interaction, we energize kids and help them find the strength they need to heal. Because our Bedside Magic performances are one-on-one, we’re able to work with kids of all ages, regardless of physical or developmental restrictions. Our performances benefit the parents and siblings of these patients who are experiencing stress as well.
Open Heart Magic has seen incredible growth since it’s inception in 2004. The community of rock star volunteer magicians has grown drastically. In 2012 there were 38 magicians. And beginning in 2016, there are 120 magicians changing the hospital experience across Chicago.
