THE STORY:

My name is David Metzger.   I want to tell you a little about my son, Joshua Alexander Metzger, who died from a brain stem cancer called DIPG.

Early in October 2008,  Joshua's mom, Monica,  noticed that something was wrong with one of Josh's eyes, and figured it was the result of a concussion from playing pee wee football. After some tests at Akron Children's Hospital, we learned the devastating news. Josh had a deadly tumor in his brain stem called a glioma.

Josh was a fun-loving, God-fearing,  athletic kid.   He was strong and healthy. He enjoyed playing football and baseball, and playing with his brothers, David, Zachary, Giorgio, and Jullian. He was a fighter, he was stubborn, he was happy, and he loved life.  However, DIPG has no cure.   Josh passed away on December 14, 2008, at the age of 8.

A friend of mine put this together (thank you, Lubo.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSfVj9i_mqQ&list=PL9FSm5kXtUg82He3fF8E4y83IiQZf9hUV&index=1

I started exercising  as a way to channel my grief after losing Josh. I started with cardio kickboxing.  Crystal Casterline, who is a good friend of mine, was the instructor.  She and my good friend Jason Wolfe encourged me to start running.   A year later, in 2010,  I ran my first two 5k races.  I worked my way up to completing my first marathon (The Cleveland Marathon,) with the encouragement of my friends from the YMCA,  in May 2013.  In the Fall of 2013, Joshua's brother Zachary, then age 15,  ran his first-ever race with me (The Northern Ohio Half Marathon, in which he placed first in his age group. Zachary,  Matt Phillips, and I ran the Cleveland Marathon in 2014 as part of the Sunflower Striders Team, which benefits Prayers From Maria Children's Glioma Cancer Foundation, a registered 501(c) nonprofit charity.

My wife, Julie, and I married in March 2015.  She, like me,  has found a love for running!  On May 21st, Julie Metzger,  Zachary Metzger,  my good friends Matt Phillips and Paul Kostyak, and I, will each run a race as part of the Sunflower Striders team during the Cleveland Marathon.  Our family and friends supported Prayers from Maria in August 2015, when we ran the Cleveland Fox 8 Fox Trot.   You can see our group in one of my photos.

Here is a video created by Fox 8 Cleveland for the 2015 Fox 8 Fox Trot.   Thank you, Tracy McCool and Doug Herrmann:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvgDAz0KC7E

Our goal is to raise at least $3000.  The money we raise will go directly to funding research pediatric high-grade gliomas, like what Josh had. Together, we will finish the race in memory of Josh, and other children whose lives were cut short.

Thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer each year. One-third of those children are diagnosed with brain tumors, and nearly half of those brain tumors are gliomas. Over 97% of children with the worst of the gliomas, diffuse pontine gliomas, die within three years. We cannot ignore this shocking statistic, and we hope that you won’t either. We need your help.

We hope you will support us and make a donation to this cause so that we can give hope to other children and families devastated by this deadly disease.

The Prayers from Maria Foundation is dedicated to funding global research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for the deadliest childhood brain tumors known as gliomas; raising public awareness about gliomas and bringing hope to children and their families who deal with the hardships of this disease.
