Lexington, Alabama has a generation’s old and proud tradition of our young people answering the call of duty to serve our country in the Armed Forces. Tragically, a significant number of our community have been killed in action defending the freedoms we enjoy today. A scholarship has been established by fellow Lexington veterans to honor these Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen that gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Each year at the Lexington High School Awards Day, to ensure we collectively never forget these heroes and their contributions to our country and community, we will share the story of a fallen Lexington veteran and present the Lexington Fallen Veterans Memorial Scholarship. These men below from our community will be honored on a rotating basis. • Charles E. Cox - Vietnam War • PFC William N. McMurtrey - Vietnam War • Jerry D. Hill - Vietnam War • SPC4 Don L. Michael - Vietnam War • PVT Marvin R. Springer - Korean War • CPL William R. McGee - Korean War • PFC Oscar B. Parker - Korean War • PFC Morris E. Hughes - Korean War
On May 19th, a Lexington veteran will share the story of Lexington fallen veteran PFC Oscar B. Parker and award the 4th scholarship to a Lexington graduating senior based upon on his/her demonstration of the corresponding attributes and characteristics of these fallen veterans:
• Selfless Service/Duty – demonstrated by the student’s active Community Service, Volunteering, & Citizenship.
• Commitment to Excellence – demonstrated by the student accomplishing ‘the academic mission’ – earning good grades, preparing for college, tutoring other students, etc. • Teamwork – demonstrated by the student’s active participation in clubs, sports teams, or other organizations.
• Personal Integrity – demonstrated by the student’s being true to oneself, word, honor, and character.
A committee of Lexington faculty members will select the scholarship recipient. The scholarship will be paid directly to the institution of high learning the student will attend. No person may be denied this scholarship based on race, creed, national origin, religion, gender, age, or handicap. The amount of the non-renewable scholarship will vary based on donations received, but our goal is a $5000 scholarship.
