Robin Steven and Ashley Musmanno
After a 6 year retirement from racing, Steve Musmanno has decided to throw his hat back into the ring in the fight against heart disease! Except, this time, it's TEAM MUSMANNO! Steven, Robin and Ashley! And this journey crosses sea, bike trails and the hard pavement of the streets of NYC to get there! As many of you know, the battle against heart disease is a lifelong journey in the Musmanno family. For those who don't know us well, Robin was born with Congenital Heart Disease. Since the age of 4, she has undergone 4 open heart surgeries, 3 ablations, 2 pacemakers and a Defibrillator and countless other collateral challenges! (And a partridge in a pear tree!)....
As a child, a single woman, a great wife, and now a wonderful mother, the battle continues on! Everyone who touches our life knows our story, hears our story, and lives our story with us! For that, we are eternally grateful that we have been blessed with the love of family, friends, colleagues, clients and those who we have yet to meet to support us on this journey. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, we travelled the journey 26.2 miles carrying heavy legs, heavy arms, and a heavy heart through the streets of NYC to carry a torch for the American Heart Association in that fight! In the 5 years since then, god has blessed us on another journey with the gift of our beautiful daughter Ashley Jane Musmanno. The gift of fighting for others and supporting our cause is something we hope to share with our daughter.
Heart Disease is a battle which costs money! It costs time, emotion, blood, sweat and tears. Many of us have the last 5, but not all have the first. Only through the battles that Robin faced as a single woman, could I truly understand the collateral damage this battle can cause. Do you have a boss who understands that your heart doesn't function well and you need to leave early, if you can't work for periods of time because of recovery from open heart surgery how do you live, who is there with you to help you through the endless nights in pain, who picks up the pieces of your life when you can't? Life, family, and financial responsibilities are all difficult enough challenges for those of us who are healthy! Those who face this heart disease battle alone, need help, need support, and sometimes need a hand to help lead them through this journey!
Harboring hearts is an organization that serves those people who lack of access to affordable housing and other essentials makes it even more difficult to face the challenges associated with undergoing a lifesaving cardiac procedure. The families we help are experiencing serious financial hardship and may be on the verge of bankruptcy or loss of housing due to the expenses associated with medical care. Many face difficult decisions about how to cover expenses for basic needs such as food, transportation, childcare and medication co-payments.
Help us pool together and be that guiding hand to support those women, those people, who don't have the support we are so fortunate to have! Please make a donation.
