BENEFITING: HOUSTONS AMAZING PLACE INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2017
THE STORY:
STARS Program
STARS, a group of 28 students aged 16 to 22, stands for Students Training in Alzheimer’s and Respite in the Summer. In this program they assist staff and participants with cognitive programming such as the arts, civic service, fitness, cultural enrichment and spiritual care. They learn about the diagnosis of dementia and how to interact with adults and families faced by this challenge.
This mission of Amazing Place would not be possible without the help of generous donors and the Houston community. The 2017 STARS want to make a difference and keep the remarkable work of Amazing Place affordable and accessible to all those in need.
About Amazing Place
The mission of Amazing Place is to provide fellowship, memory care, and wellness for adults with mild to moderate memory loss and support to their families and the community.
Our mission is three-fold. First, our Dementia Day Program offers valuable participant programming including physical activity, sensory stimulation, spirituality, cognitive games, civic service and cultural programs. Second, our Caregiver Support services offer stress workshops, counseling sessions, educational seminars, care planning, as well as financial assistance with attendance costs. Third, we support the community through our Community Education initiatives including educational Brain Health Matters presentations, clinical service learning opportunities for nursing/medical students, professional peer education, counseling and support to families in the community, and educational classes and seminars.
In order to keep the daily rate reasonable for our participants, we rely on the generosity of donors to help supplement our operating expenses. Today, the daily rate is $90, while the actual operating cost per participant is $154. Our demographics are diverse: participant ages range from 50 to 100, and come from 53 different zip codes. In 2016, AP served a total of 2,872 people – participants, caregivers, and the community.
