THE STORY:

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus are cultural ambassadors – changing hearts and minds around the world through song. Next stop: South Africa.

We need your donation so every singer who wants to make a difference can.

In the last 18 months, we have watched fear and inequality take root around the world. Elections in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Poland, Britain, Hungary, Sweden, Finland, Italy—and the United States—have given voice to populist anger with refugees and immigrants. Fear of the other has stoked deadly violence this past year alone at a nightclub in Istanbul; a concert in Manchester, England; and a street corner in Charlottesville.

We won’t let hate win. 40,000 Bostonians marched against fear and bigotry this summer. Our voices will be heard.   Our response will be to do what we’ve always done: embody the message of love and acceptance. It is who we are. It is what we do.

Next June, we will travel to South Africa on a tour that will deepen our mission to create musical experiences that inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. South Africa is home to more asylum seekers than any other country, and nearly all of them come from Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many of them are LGBTQ Africans who fear for their safety in their home countries.

During our tour, we will donate all ticket sales to local organizations that assist LGBTQ South Africans, including refugees and immigrants from neighboring countries.

     · Our performance in the township of Langa will benefit People Against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty, which advocates for asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants in South Africa, including those who are LGBTQ.

     · Our concert in Cape Town will benefit Pride Shelter, which provides services to LGBTQ people who are homeless.

     · Our show in Johannesburg will benefit an HIV advocacy organization and Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action, the center for LGBTQ culture and education in South Africa.

     · Our performance in Soweto will benefit a new LGBT Youth program.

     · In George we will be the first organized gay event ever in the area, raising critical visibility for LGBT people. They are creating their first-ever gay pride march which we will lead.

Scholarships are provided to members of the chorus who are not able to pay the participation fee.

South Africa is a country of rich musical and choral traditions, so we’re very excited to perform for audiences there and to honor those traditions. Because protest songs were an integral part of the anti-apartheid movement, South Africans believe deeply in the transformative power of music and its use as a tool to effect social change. BGMC was founded on those same beliefs and we hope our concerts will be received in that spirit.

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director

We use the universal language of music to change the world. Our concerts are about sharing our stories and our humanity through song, enabling others to find common ground in our experiences. This is how change happens—when we see that there is more that unites us than divides us. We look forward to continuing these conversations in South Africa just as we have in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Wrocław, Poland, and in schools, houses of worship, and community centers across Massachusetts.
