The Story

EVENT DATE: May 05, 2018

Did you know, suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined? After cancer and heart disease, suicide accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death. While other leading causes of death have decreased or remained steady over the past decade, U.S. suicide rates have INCREASED over the past three decades, with a notable rise in suicides among baby boomers and women. 44,965 people died by suicide in 2016 making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in America, and the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. While there’s no simple solution to this pressing problem, change begins by stepping out and erasing the stigma! Please support the 13th Annual MOM Race for Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Royal Oak. The event is for all ages and fitness levels and brings Metro Detroit communities together to talk about mental illness. We’re sharing stories of loved ones lost to suicide. We’re showing the world that our loved ones are so much more than the manner in which they died. Please register online by Monday, April 30th to reserve your spot at the 2018 MOM Race. For those interested in doing more than just participating in the 5K, consider making an additional donation to MOM or, better yet, starting your own fundraising campaign! The individual and team that raises the most MOM donations (from funds raised through Crowdrise as well as Eventbrite, Paypal, and cash/checks the old-fashioned way) will win a prize and be acknowledged during the awards ceremony following the MOM Race. Donations to Mind Over Matter can be made year-round, but in order to be considered for the 2018 fundraising challenge competition, donations must be received by no later than 8:30 AM on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Charitable gifts made to Mind Over Matter are tax-exempt under IRS 501(c)(3). Proceeds from the 2018 MOM Race will be donated to The University of Michigan Depression Center to further research, education, and treatment of mental health disorders; to Know Resolve to provide educational, music-based suicide prevention presentations to junior high, high school, and college students; and to Common Ground to provide life-saving crisis intervention services to families and individuals in need. Thank you in advance for your support!!
