2018 Scott Carter Foundation Marathon Weekend Fundraiser
EVENT DATE: Jan 03, 2018
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Jan 01, 2018
Welcome to the Scott Carter Foundation Team Page for the 2018 Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna®! We are thrilled to again be an official charity group in the 2018 Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna®. Our team is dedicated to raising money to fund childhood cancer research. Scott Carter was a 13-year old boy who died in December of 1993 after a courageous three-year battle with bone cancer. The Scott Carter Foundation is operated by volunteers, allowing almost all money raised to go toward funding research projects.
Scott believed that if enough time, energy and money were devoted to children’s cancer research, a cure could be found. The Scott Carter Foundation was formed to raise money to further Scott’s dream of finding that cure! During the duration of his illness, Scott put together a remarkable collection of sport and celebrity memorabilia, which he called “Scott Carter’s Heroes”. His dream was to display the collection for the enjoyment of the public and to raise money for childhood cancer research. The collection contains over 300 items and a large portion of the collection is on display at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex! All our runners have the opportunity to visit Scott’s collection when attending the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo for packet pickup!
The foundation has funded more than nine two-year research fellowships at institutions including M.D. Anderson, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Texas Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Denver, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Duke University Medical Center and Duke University Children’s Hospital.
