2041: International Antarctica Expedition (IAE) 2017
Organized by: Removed Removed
EVENT DATE Mar 05, 2017
Have you heard about the news on how Arctic ice is disappearing? Do you know that industrial activities and transportation are gradually altering the ecosystem and eco balance in Arctic? One thing is certain: we do not want to see the same things happen in Antarctica. More worrying is the fact that the Antarctic-Environmental Protocol, the agreement signed in 1991 that protects Antarctica from excess human exploitation and designates the continent as "natural reserve, devoted to peace and science", could be reviewed, changed and even abandonedafter its 50-year anniversary in 2041. Join me in this fund raising to raise public's awareness of the issue, to protect the last great wildness in Antarctica beyond year 2041 and to create a more environmentally sustainable future.
Who am I?
I am Heather Jingrui Xie, a 3rd-year student from Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). I have long been interested in environmental sustainability and global citizenship. As a student from Beijing, China, I deeply understand China’s role in the preservation of the environment. I witnessed how large population, growing economic output and loose legal framework contribute to the problem of eco-fragility in China. As a large game-changing nation, China is playing and will play an important role in the preservation of the Antarctica. This is why I feel the urgency of raising public’s awareness on the issue and driving social changes in China. Interested as I am in environmental protection, I could never imagine myself stepping on the Antarctic! Imagine my excitement when I learnt that I am a team member in 2041 expedition.
What do I plan to do in Antarctica?
From 5th to 15th March 2017, I will be joining Robert Swan and youths from all over the world to start the inspiring adventure to Antarctica. During my expedition, I will learn about the eco system in Antarctica and witness firsthand the effects of climate change in Antarctica. I will also explore how renewable energy could be a solution to tackle the global warming problem in Antarctica. Through outdoor activities, debates and public speaking sessions, I also expect to discuss about big issues on environmental protection with bright youths from all around the globe.
How do I make the most out of the experience?
I want to bring my experience to wider audience through social media, where I will share my photos and thoughts during the expedition. When I come back, I plan to share my experience with my university and local communities. I am also going to start campaigns on the preservation of Antarctica to raise more people's awareness and drive social changes in China.
I cannot wait to start my journey to witness the wildness, be moved and be inspired. Your support really means a lot to me and it is indeed my dream come true. Thank you very much for your support!
2041 is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the Antarctic. It was founded by polar explorer, environmental leader and public speaker Robert Swan, OBE, the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles. The Mission of 2041 is to inspire, stimulate and connect organizations and communities who seek to protect our world and create a more sustainable, clean energy future. 2041 is to preserve the Antarctic by putting renewable energy at the forefront of the global agenda so there is no need to exploit what is the worlds last great wilderness. Each year, 2041 selects 140 young leaders out of over 4,000 applicants to join Robert Swan on this expedition and to educate and engage the next generation of leaders.
