A Pencil. Do you have any idea the kind of magic a pencil holds? I've spent my whole life not fully understanding the purpose of my education, and I just barely scraped by. But I had access to something that could have really changed my life; to learn great things, and I took it for granted. But six months ago, I started a journey that has had a profound impact on me. I made the decision to go to college and learn as much as I can, as often as I can. It seems like a simple thing, but these past six months, I have never fought for anything so hard. This is something that I have wanted, more than anything else in the world, and I would do anything to get it. It's been a stressful six months, but this fall, I get to live my dream and further my education in the most beautiful city in the world. I can pick up a pencil and use it whenever I want. But what about children in other countries? Children in the developing world are in desperate need of that opportunity that I took for granted all those years. Places like Guadalupana, Ghana, Guatemala, and so many others have little or no way of giving their children any form of education. That's where Pencils of Promise comes in. Pencils of Promise is a non-profit organization that helps raise money to build schools in developing countries and then provides those children with the education they so desperately desire. If you want to learn more about how PoP works, I highly recommend heading over to their website, and even checking out their book. With $20,000 we can build a school of our own for these kids. It's a lot of money, but I think we can get them close. Think about what your education has done for you, or the kind of education you wish you had. These children don't have to hold hands to cross these dangerous roads to get to a run-down school for a second-rate education. These children are our future, and they deserve so much more than what's been given to them. So for my 20th birthday, I wanted to try and get people together to raise $20,000 for PoP to build a two-structure school. It seems impossible, but isn't everything until it actually happens? We have the ability and the power to do great and magical things, so why not try? Even if we don't get to 20,000, even if we only get 200... it's a step in the right direction, and it proves that there is magic in the world, and power in a pencil. So, get involved however you can. Stay at home instead of going out to the movies, eat in instead of out, spread the word in your community. Your voice is stronger than you realize, so use it and shout out your goal as loud and passionate as you can! You can change the world with that voice, so when are you going to start? #EveryoneHasPromise
