BENEFITING: MENTORING PEACE THROUGH ART INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 14, 2015
In 1979, the mothers of Pilsen who, after a long struggle, had won a concession from the City of Chicago to build a neighborhood school asked artist Jimmy Longoria to design and paint a mural “for the future” on Benito Juarez High School. The resultant painting broke many traditions and conventions. The innovations in process allowed this painting to survive well beyond its projected 20-year life. Recent construction on the building, though, has made restoration of the mural necessary at this time. The theme, “A La Esperanza” (To the Hope) created an innovative narrative style that was more poem than statement, and has survived into the 21st Century. Universally recognized as an icon in Pilsen and of the mural movement of the last century, we invite you to help revitalize it for another 20 years. Please join us by donating today.
