BENEFITING: PSC Partners Seeking A Cure
EVENT DATE: Jul 25, 2014
Mileage Tracker: 101
To promote organ donation awareness and raise money to find a cure for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare liver disease, I will be biking for 24 hours in the Riverwest 24, a 24-hour bike race taking place from 7pm to 7pm on July 25 and 26. Riders cycle through the night (and morning and afternoon and night again) in order to complete as many laps as possible in 24 hours.
PSC and organ donation are near and dear causes. My brother Jon was diagnosed with PSC 11 years ago when he was just 10 years old. The only "cure" for PSC is a liver transplant, and while he is on the list, wait times for any organ are excessive. Thankfully, my brother is eligible for a live-donor liver transplant, and I have been evaluated and approved to be the donor. When the time is right (hopefully even this year) I will donate a portion of my liver to Jon so that he can get back to living a more normal life.
In the meantime, I am hoping to spread awareness of PSC and raise funds for the nonprofit PSC Partners Seeking a Cure to support education and research so that a cure for this disease can eventually be found.
I hope you will consider donating to support this cause. If you prefer to make me work for your donation, you may pledge a donation on a per-lap basis to make sure I'm really hauling ass. Each lap is approximately 4.6 miles, however, random "bonus checkpoints" take riders off course to complete challenges to earn one extra lap per bonus checkpoint. My goal is to complete 75 laps, including bonus laps.
Regardless of whether you are able to contribute, feel free to show your support by cheering me on as I huff and puff through the dangerous streets of Riverwest. Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated!
To pledge a lap-based donation:
1.Email me at email@example.com with "Pledge" in the subject line and the amount you’d like to pledge per lap.
2.If you would like to cap your donation at a maximum dollar amount, indicate that in the email, as well.
3.Follow the official leaderboard at www.riverwest24.com during the race to track my laps
4.After I wake up from my nap on July 27, I will send an email with my official total (laps + bonus laps) and instructions for payment.
