THE STORY:

Adeela Tajdar wrote -

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined." - Thoreau

I turned 25 on February 7th. It was a big birthday for me and a particularly eye-opening one. I realized I've always had these lists of things I want to do with my life and in my life, but haven't always been the best at really committing to and going for them. Time for that to change! Life's too short and precious to sit idle and dream pretty dreams without at least trying to make them into reality, right? So I turned 25 and decided to get off my butt and start making moves toward a future me and world I'd like to see!

I've wanted to run a half marathon for awhile now and get in shape and found this great run! It's called the 2012 Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon and is all about empowering women toward a healthy lifestyle - bringing them together in the quest to live better and be the best versions of themselves they can be!

This year, as part of the Faiths Act Fellowship I'm doing, I'm also working on the issue of malaria. I didn't know much about the disease beforehand, but it takes the lives of 655,000 people annually and affects those most vulnerable - pregnant women and children under the age of 5 in Africa. It's entirely treatable and preventable. In fact, the US and most of Europe had a huge malaria problem, but by investing in prevention, education, and treatment, they were able to get rid of it! The disease weakens African communities from being able to move themselves forward - stopping children from going to school, parents from being able to work, and so much more. So while I'm running this race for me, I'm also running it for them. I want those at risk for malaria to know there are people in the world who care about them, want to shed a light on this issue, and believe that where you're born, shouldn't determine whether or not you get access to healthcare. Just $10 buys a bednet and information to help families learn how to use them!

Your support is SUPER appreciated! It means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to the families in Mali, where your money will go! I'm donating through Islamic Relief because they've already established strong relationships with communities on the ground in Mali (the country is 90% Muslim) and are working hard to change the narrative on religion and show how it can be and is a force for good in the world today! Faith is criticized a lot in the media these days, but it inspires so many to do good - to work toward social justice, equality, and the betterment of the world, to fight poverty, corruption, and hatred, and to be kind, compassionate, and sensible, even when they don't want to be :P - it's important not to forget that :) Contact me if you want to talk more about this or the other interfaith/development work I'm doing this year!

Thanks again!  Two months to get into shape!!
