I made it into the 2017 Boston Marathon with a charity team called 261 Fearless! Out of all the charities I had the opportunity to apply for, this one really resonated with me the most. I was so happy to get that phone call saying I had made it on to the team. I am incredibly honored and excited and look forward to some awesome runs!
The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world. It started in 1897. Only men were allowed to run because women were considered too fragile. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer decided to do something about the all men's run. She decided to apply to be a runner using only her initials. No one reviewing the applications knew she was a woman. She got in. On the day of the race, at about mile 2, the race director spotted her and physically attacked her. He was trying to rip the race number off her. Her race number was 261. He was unsuccessful and Kathrine went on to finish her marathon. She was the first woman in Boston Marathon history to finish the race as a registered participant. After finishing that race, Kathrine dedicated her life to empowering women to run.
Women were not allowed to officially register for the Boston Marathon until 5 years later, in 1972.
261 Fearless, Inc. is the legacy of inclusion and empowerment that Kathrine started and will pass to others. All fundraisers, including me!, on TEAM 261 FEARLESS will line up on the Boston Marathon start line with Kathrine to mark the 50th anniversary of her historic run. Together as women, we will celebrate fearlessness on the streets of Boston.
Being part of the team means I will raise a minimum of $7,261 for 261 Fearless, a 501(c) charity, but I'm shooting for $8,000!
Please help me reach my goal! For every donation, I will send you as many self stick tattoos of a unicorn (Boston Marathong mascot) as you like. The tattoos are about the size of a silver dollar and have "26.2" written on the edge. You can see the design in the pictures. Use the tattoos for yourself or give them to your kids! I want everyone who donates to come away with something to remember their donation by!
