EVENT DATE: Jul 26, 2015

THE STORY:

I have known and worked some incredible charities over the years, and now I have the privilege of sharing with you the work that Genesys Works - Bay Area (GWBA) is doing to change the lives of deserving Bay Area high school students.

We all know the stats around education and opportunity gaps:

  • Less than 50% minorities graduate HS
  • Of those that do, less than 51% earn a college degree
  • By 2020, 2/3 of all US jobs will require a degree (especially in STEM)

The list goes on... So, what can we do?

  • Training (technology & professional)
  • Internships (*real* work)
  • College Support

There are organizations out there that do these things... However, GWBA brings all of these together in one comprehensive program with a history of success in meeting both short term and long term needs for our underserved populations.

GWBA's outcomes prove that we are meeting unmet needs of underrepresented minorities in STEM and technology. 95% of our students go to college, and 95% persist!

We focus on academic and professional success. Rather than fast-track students to a career, we get them to college, support their persistence, and then a professional career. Adults who hold a college degree make 40% more than their peers. Higher education is a proven pathway out of poverty, which is the ultimate goal for our students.

The vision for Genesys Works is to empower every public high school student, regardless of race or background, to succeed in the modern economy.

How It Works:

GWBA offers a tech-focused solution that addresses achievement and wealth disparities, as well as diversity issues in STEM and technology. We empower to students to change their life-trajectory through realizing their own capabilities at a pivotal time of their life when they are making critical decision about their future. We keep them on track before it is too late. 3rd-year high school students are identified through a formal partnership with local school districts and individual schools and recruited into GWBA’s core 14-month training and internship program, which is comprised of the following:

  • Summer Training: An 8-week intensive technical and professional skills training program during the summer following students’ junior year giving students skills that go beyond the classroom.
  • Meaningful Internships: GWBA students are more than interns. They are paid, part-time employees providing a valuable service for an entire year to major corporations. This opens students’ minds to the possibility of becoming a professional in the knowledge economy. Internships are also beneficial to GWBA’s partners due to our “double bottom line” approach.
  • College and Career Connection (CCC): Students attend weekly sessions throughout their senior year, where they receive 1:1 mentorship from GWBA program coordinators to ensure success in their internships and proper preparations for college.
  • Alumni Success Program: GWBA program graduates are provided with additional support and resources to help them successfully achieve their college and career objectives, as well as maintain ties to core program participants, corporate partners, funders, schools, and community groups.

2014 impact:

  • 77 students served.
  • 20,521 total hours worked in internships.
  • $225,768 total dollars earned by students.
  • 100% high school graduation rate.
  • 95% matriculation to college.
  • 95% GWBA Alumni Program participation.
  • 90% retention rate for partner schools.
  • 80% retention rate for partner companies.
  • Increase in grit, confidence and determination to achieve academic and professional success.

Anticipated outcomes from June 2015-June 2016:

  • 260 students served.
  • Combined total of 80,000 hours of real-world workplace experience.
  • Approximately $960,000 in wages earned through internships.
  • 100% high school graduation rate.
  • 95% matriculation to college.
  • 95% GWBA Alumni Program participation.
  • 95% persistence beyond the students’ first year in college.
  • Increase in grit, confidence and determination to achieve academic and professional success.

All this, and we have an earned income model that creates long-term sustainability, as well as an outside evaluator to measure our impact.
