As many of you know, Athletes Unlimited is a very important organization to my family. By creating opportunities for kids like my son Tom to fully participate in sports and recreation activities, we have truly become an AU family. When we became part of the AU community in 2006 (then called Newton Special Athletes) I couldn't have dreamed what an important role AU would have in our lives. Not only does Tom participate in sports that he loves, he has become part of a community where there are tons of smiles, high fives all around, and on some occasions even good natured trash talk!
These kids and young adults (over 250 of them!) inspire me all the time with their positive attitudes. In fact they've inspired me so much, I'm thrilled to run 26.2 for AU to support them. There is even more we can do to provide richer experiences for larger age groups and continue to be at the forefront of therapeutic recreation. While AU has participants with autism, Down's Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disability (just to name a few), we can reach out further to other communities of families as well. But we need everyone's support.
So I will run. and run. and then I will run some more. (I'm on the last week of my 18 week training plan and still alive to tell about it). Thanks in advance to my family who is already dealing with the mind numbing details of mom's training plan, smelly sneakers and fixation on weather forecasts and GPS watches.
Please give if you can. Truly, everything counts. My goal is to raise $6,000 for these awesome athletes so we can expand our adventures and welcome more new families into the AU fold.
Lots of AU athletes will be cheering me on on April 20. I hope you can too! And if you see me on Comm Ave, stop and say hi or give me a drink and a snack and send me on my way. I've got a lot of miles to cover for a great cause!
See you at the finish line!
