ORGANIZER: Newton Athletes Unlimited, Inc
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
Athletes Unlimited Newton is a program currently serving over 250 athletes from Newton and surrounding areas. The mission of Athletes Unlimited Newton is to offer high quality recreational programing to encourage physical, social, emotional and intellectual development to children and adults with disabilities. As a physical therapist I have made it my life’s work to help maximize the independence of people of all ages living with many different types of disability. I am strongly drawn to Athletes Unlimited and its endeavor to provide athletic programming, including baseball, basketball, skiing, tennis, horseback riding, and more, to its athletes with special needs. Programs like Athletes Unlimited Newton provide children with amazing opportunities to improve their health and wellness, but also give these children and their families a chance to socialize and feel part of a larger community.
Having had the opportunity to meet with some of the parents and family members of participants in Athletes Unlimited Newton it was immediately apparent the positive impact that this organization has on the lives of all involved. It is a close-knit community that revolves around friendship, fun, and love of the game (whatever they choose to play). This community will be what inspires me to get to the finish line.
As a first time marathon runner, the Boston Marathon (and Heartbreak Hill) will be one of the most challenging and exciting endeavors I have taken on to date. But I chose the Boston Marathon because I am a born and raised New Englander. Having lived in Boston for the past 3 years, the race’s representation of the tough and determined Boston spirit hold a special place in my heart. Every member of Athletes Unlimited Newton will be at the forefront of my mind as I run the 26.2 miles to the Boston Marathon finish line. I am proud to be running for such a wonderful organization, and hope you will join me in showing your support for such an inspiring program.
