BENEFITING: CHICAGO BOOKS TO WOMEN IN PRISON
I started volunteering with Chicago Books to Women in Prison in 2015 as part of my goal for the year to do more for my world. It didn't take long for me to recognize the value in fulfilling a book request. I am so excited to be running the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon in support of CBWP.
For me and many of the people I know getting a book (used or new) is no big deal at all. We see an article or get a recommendation and think "sounds cool, I'll check it out" and go get that book. For the women serving time in the US prison system getting a book they want isn't that easy, there are many restrictions on books coming into prisons and dismal/outdated options in prison libraries. CBWP is empowering, giving agency and resources to people in a vulnerable position in our society.
In 2015 CBWP mailed 3,086 packages of books—9,200 or so books in all—and 361 blank journals. The all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization reached nearly 2,500 individual women in 53 prisons, including the largest women’s prison in the country and several men’s prisons where transwomen are incarcerated. All of that was made possible by the beautiful volunteers and support from awesome people like you, people with big hearts who donate!
I look forward to your support!
