BENEFITING: AMERICAN LIVER FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
HOURS PLEDGED: 20
For my 10th marathon this year for the first time I am racing to support a wonderful charity, the American Liver Foundation. ALF provides funds necessary for research into liver disease, public education and awareness, and patient support services to stop one of the most common killers in the United States that affects 1 in 10 of us. Probably you know at least one friend or family member with liver disease, which unfortunately has been stigmatized and so receives less attention than other diseases.
The 26.2 miles from Staten Island to Manhattan is nothing compared to what children and adults with liver disease have to endure every day. My nephew, Angelo Paulino, shares his story:
" I am a 17 year old boy who was born with polycystic kidney and liver disease. At birth I stayed at the hospital for one full year receiving dialysis and i have many other complications. I got out of the hospital with oxygen, a feeding tube, 17 medications, dialysis. and a lot of love from my parents. I was in and out of the hospital for the first seven years of my life in critical condition many times. I did not attend school till i was eight, because at that time I got a miracle--my kidney and liver transplant. My life as always been a challenge that i love to get across to others. P.S I can't wait to be a doctor."
To sponsor me for the NYC marathon with a donation of any amount to ALF (of course tax-deductible and feel-good!!), go to my fundraising page below. All funds go directly to ALF. Also, there you can find information about my charity fitness fundraiser being held in August in Prospect Park!
