EVENT DATE: May 18, 2014
My mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer in July 2013 at the young age of 58. If you know my sparkplug of a mother you know she is active, fit, health conscious, a clean eater and the last person on Earth you’d expect to be diagnosed with such a devastating disease. It rocked our family to the core. Staying true to her nature, she never faltered, she never expressed an ounce of doubt that she would give anything but every bit of herself to fight and declare victory over this awful diagnosis. After a day long, extensive surgery in August and a grueling recovery, she has battled for the past 5 months through chemotherapy. She has shown strength, dignity, beauty and grace throughout it all. I can honestly say I have never been more proud to call her my mother. On January 7, 2014 we received the phenomenal news that she beat the odds and is CANCER FREE!! There are no words…
The decision to run my FIRST FULL marathon, the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, was made during my mom’s chemo treatments. I watched her struggle, her pain, and her strength and was inspired. I want to run this to honor her strength and to raise awareness of a disease known as the “Silent Killer”. If you have the time on May 18, 2014, I hope you will join us in downtown Cleveland to watch a team of women in TEAL TUTUS make their way proudly through the race course as Marti’s Mighty Warriors! I also hope you will find it in your heart to sponsor me in this effort to raise money for Ovarian Cancer research. All donations will be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund www.ocrf.org
