I celebrated my 33rd birthday in early November 2013. Those dates also marked the formation of the deadliest Philippine typhoon ever recorded.
Typhoon Haiyan first landed on November 7 in the Philippines, and was the strongest tropical cyclone to make a landfall on record. Haiyan caused catastrophic destruction in the central Philippines. According to UN officials, approximately 11 million were affected and many left homeless. Cities and towns were largely destroyed, over 5,000 lost their lives, and nearly 22,000 are missing to date.
As a Filipina with family still in the Philippines, the country and people are close to my heart. Though none of my immediate family members were affected, relief and rescue are needed for many others.
To mark my milestone birthday three years ago, I held a similar fundraiser. Given the tragic events of this year, I am inspired to do so again. It is my hope that friends, family and community will join together in "33 for 33" in support of UNICEF’s Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts; contributing a minimum of $33 in honor of my 33rd birthday. My goal is to raise $1,000 for UNICEF by the end of 2013. $33 is the suggested minimum, but gifts of all sizes will make a great difference.
