Support the National Park You Enjoyed this Summer!

This year, over 1/2 million people like you enjoyed the Boston Harbor Islands, either to break away from the hustle and bustle of the city, attend a performance, take the kids out to explore, exercise, camp, or just enjoy a day on the water. 

Since the park opened in 1996, The Boston Harbor Island Alliance, working in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has invested in park facilities, produced fun and educational programs, and provided free park access to nearly 150,000 deserving families and youth from across the region.

This summer alone we provided over 15,000 free tickets to the park and operated more than 200 free public programs including favorites such as Spectacle Island Yoga, Civil War Dress-Up, Berklee Music on Georges Island, Kayaking, Vintage Base Ball, and our Family 5K and Fun Run. This list doesn't include the hundreds of daily programs hosted by DCR and NPS rangers, including nature walks, living history programs, Fort Warren tours, bird watching, and fitness clinics.

Most of these public events and free access programs are paid for by generous donations from corporations and foundations throughout the region, while additional funding comes directly from our land management partners to operate, staff, and maintain the park.

But -- and here's the catch -- despite the success and the wonderful support that we've received, there is so much more to do to make our park the world-class destination that it can (and should) be.

Boston Harbor Island Alliance generates nearly all of our financial support from an annual gala, corporate sponsorship, and grants. While we don't expect this to change, we're wrapping up this amazing 2014 season with a challenge to the 1/2 million people that visited the park -- we strive to raise $34,000 in private donations by 12/31/14. That's $1,000 for each of the 34 islands and peninsulas that make up this amazing National Park that you visited this year.

We will reach our $34,000 goal if everyone who:

  • Visited any park location donated just $0.07 (or)
  • Rode the ferry to one of the islands donated just $0.28 (or)
  • Took a ranger led tour this summer donated just $1.00 (or)
  • Attended a children's program donated just $1.25 (or)
  • Volunteered in a stewardship activity donated just $2.00 (or)
  • Participated in instructor led kayaking, yoga, or fitness donated just $4.00

When we reach our $34,000 goal, rest assured your contribution will be put to good and immediate use! Your donation will be reinvested into the programs you attended and the facilities you enjoyed. Musicians will be hired, equipment for children's programs will be purchased, moorings will be maintained, special events organized, and much more. 

Our ask is simple - please consider making a modest donation between now and December 31st to the Boston Harbor Island Alliance and support the National Park you enjoyed this summer.
