BENEFITING: Old Songs, Inc.
Hello, fans of folk, traditional and world music! I would like to tell you about my favorite community in the world, the family and village that is Old Songs, Inc. I proudly state, “I attended my first Old Songs Festival when I was two weeks old!” This is true, although I have no active memory of the event. One of my earliest memories is bouncing in the Pack-&-Play at the age of two years while dancers step and tap away on the stage. The story starts with me fast asleep until I heard the music and dancing, woke up, and had to move along in time. The music reached deep inside and imprinted on my core self.
Through Old Songs, I have been exposed to world-class musicians in family-friendly settings. Memorable encounters from a life spent at Old Songs are too many to enumerate, but a few notables would include Peggy Seeger, Utah Phillips, and Natalie MacMaster. I developed an appreciation of a wide variety of musical styles and genres, learned about history and politics, humanity and art. I experienced teamwork as a member of the volunteer crew. I learned about community and how to accept and appreciate another person for the gifts they bring.
Supporting Old Songs, for me, is not a matter of choice; the community has supported me my entire life. I now work in the office, and I feel I give back to the community by my commitment to keep stewardship of the organization. Old Songs taught me that time and money both have their place in this world, and if you cannot support with money, you give yourself instead.
