Steve Jobs, Patrick Swayze, Randy Pausch (author of "The Last Lecture") - these are the people I "know" that have had pancreatic cancer. That is, until recently. As I've gotten to know more and more people in the running community, I've met an incredibly positive woman whose life has been touched by this dreaded disease not once (with the loss of her mom), but twice (with the diagnosis of her father).
The statistics for this disease are staggering: Pancreatic cancer is the 4th largest killer of all cancer killers and the least funded of the top 10 cancers. It is also the only cancer on the top 10 list with a single digit survival rate after 5 years.
My family has lost a family member to cancer (colon) and we know the hurt and heartache such a loss brings. I'm running to raise money for Project Purple in the Lincoln Half Marathon so no other family has to experience this at the hands of Pancreatic Cancer.
