Welcome to my fundraising page for Project Purple! Project Purple’s goal is to BEAT PANCREATIC CANCER by participating in road races all over the world. I’m running on behalf of my mom, Patti Swoboda, and all sufferers of pancreatic cancer everywhere. When I initially decided to run the Lincoln Half Marathon (my first half marathon ever, by the way), I didn’t realize that Project Purple was the designated charity. When I went to sign up and saw that it was, it was like a sign that I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. For those of you who don’t know, my mom, Patti Swoboda, an otherwise healthy 54-year old woman, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just before Christmas in 2012. When we (meaning me, my dad, my sister & brother, our spouses, our 7 children, and 2 more yet to be born) found out the diagnosis, we were absolutely devastated. I immediately jumped on the computer and started researching. The more I read, the more devastated I became. Let’s just say, her chances were not very good. We were very worried that that Christmas would be our last with her. In January 2013, my mom had her entire pancreas removed, making her an instant diabetic. The recovery was grueling, but I am beyond happy to report that 3 years later, she remains CANCER FREE! It is an amazing and very rare story with this deadly disease. All cancers suck, but the American Cancer Society recently announced that pancreatic cancer has moved to the #3 on the list of deadliest cancers. Recent celebrity deaths include David Bowie , Alan Rickman (aka Professor Snape from Harry Potter), Steve Jobs (Apple CEO), and Patrick Swayze a few years ago. This proves that no amount of money can save you from this cancer. What money CAN do is help find a cure – and that has been my mission since Mom was diagnosed. Each year, we participate in Purple Stride to raise money, and this year I’m adding Project Purple to the list. I am beyond excited to be a part of this team for my first half-marathon, and I hope that you will support me in my endeavor! Cheer me on and help raise money for this wonderful cause! In the last four years, our charity has provided $500K in grants to top medical centers specializing in the study of pancreatic cancer. We have carefully selected institutions based on the quality of their work and their researchers. Recipients include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Tufts Medical Center, University of Nebraska Medical Center, NYU, and Columbia. Grants have also been awarded to postdoctoral students and professional researchers, to support studies in early detection methods, a cure, and a better understanding of the mysterious and deadly disease.
Patient Financial Aid
Project Purple helps support families and individuals dealing with the financial burden of pancreatic cancer. Patients who are currently battling are given support with medical bills, living expenses, and travel. We also give care packages to patients to provide comfort during hospital visits.
For the past three years, Project Purple has helped undergraduate, graduate, and nursing students achieve their academic goals by providing scholarships. These awards are given to bright, passionate students whose lives have been adversely affected by pancreatic cancer. Many have lost parents or other close relatives to the disease, other had the disease themselves.
