This June, I'm celebrating my 40th birthday and want to start this next decade off making a significant impact for an organization that has a strong connection to my family, the National Fragile X Foundation (NFXF). What if 400 of my closest friends, family, other Fragile X families, and strangers could donate $100 each? We could raise $40,000 and help lead the way to finding a cure for Fragile X! As many of you already know, our youngest son, Gavin, was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome back in 2011 when he was 2 years old. Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities. The cause: a single missing protein, which is vital for normal brain function. It affects 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 6000 females. Although advancements in treatments continue to improve; currently there is no known cure. Research is essential to positively impact not only those with Fragile X but also autism, depression, Alzheimer's and more. Like many of you, no one in our family had even heard of Fragile X Syndrome before Gavin's diagnosis. Shocking knowing the prevalence of Fragile X and how important its link to so many other disorders. So, it was the start of a new journey of discovery and investigation to find the best possible therapies, academic assistance, and support for our family. Organizations like the NFXF have been an integral part of this new life journey by providing us with access to experts and a community of endless support. Most importantly, Gavin is thriving! He experiences life with a joy and enthusiasm that we wish we could bottle up and sell. He continues to work at school and at home with Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Adaptive Physical Education, Academic Assistance, and more. He loves his friends (which basically includes everyone he has ever met - he loves to be with people!), basketball, Paw Patrol, and snuggling up on the couch. He has completed our family in a way that makes us all better! All of the support and expertise we have received through the Fragile X community is the driving force behind his continued progress. There is still so much more that can be done for Fragile X research and support; the NFXF is leading the way! Join me in celebrating my 40th year by donating toward the goal of $40K!
