This year, Open Meadow and I both turn (gulp) 40, and to mark both occasions, I’ve set a goal of convincing at least 40 people to donate $40 each to a college scholarship fund for Open Meadow students.
As my 40th birthday (rapidly) approaches and I look back on all that I’ve experienced, one of the things I’m most thankful for is the gift of my college education. My Bachelors degree has acted as a golden passport – it has provided me with access to unlimited opportunities, has allowed me to chart my own course in pursuing my interests, and gives me the confidence that I can accomplish anything I set out to do.
For the last 12 years, I’ve enjoyed working for Open Meadow (www.openmeadow.org), a nonprofit that provides educational services to young people who have not succeeded in traditional school systems. Our “College Success” program provides transition services for our high school graduates as they navigate the post-secondary landscape. That first year on a college campus can be lonely, confusing, and overwhelming – especially for students who have historically struggled in school, and who may be the first in their families to pursue education beyond a high school diploma. Open Meadow supports these students – financially, academically, socially, and emotionally -- to ensure that they persist through that challenging first year, thus increasing the chances that they will earn their degrees and ultimately be able to create the lives they want to live.
My 40th birthday wish is that all of you will help me raise funds for this fantastic program. 100% of your donation in response to this appeal will directly support students in their transition to college– money raised will be set aside in a scholarship fund that is only used to cover the costs of tuition, books, school supplies, bus passes, or other immediate needs of our college-bound students (not staff salaries or agency overhead).
As my birthday gift to Open Meadow, I’ll add $10 to each of the first 40 donations. In addition, I’ve lined up a matching gift of three times my contribution. If you enjoy a good word problem as much as I do, you’ve probably already computed that this appeal has the potential to raise $3200* or more for students!
Like me, you may have had the good fortune to receive support for a college education that allowed YOU to pursue your dreams. Will you join me in contributing to a program that helps others pursue theirs?
PS: I’m calling this appeal “$40 for 40” because it’s catchy, but of course contributions in any amount will be very much appreciated! You can donate here at crowdrise or directly at www.openmeadow.org
* Word Problem Answer Key: $40*40=$1600, plus $10*40=$400, plus 3*$400=$1200 --> $1600+$400+$1200=$3200 !
GOAL UPDATE 9/10/11: The first 37 contributors brought the pot to $3265, so I've increased the goal to $3385 to make room for another 3 folks at $40 each!
